Reclaiming Joy After Fear

There are moments in healing that don’t come with warning.
They don’t arrive as a grand breakthrough or a finish line.
They arrive quietly—in the middle of something ordinary—and suddenly everything feels different.
Today was one of those moments.
Five years ago, I was hit by a truck.
Since then, my body has carried a deep imprint of fear—especially around motion, rides, and environments where I don’t feel in control.
Fairs used to be something I loved.
But after the accident, even standing near the rides would cause terror to rise up and take over my entire body.
It wasn’t a thought.
It was physical. Immediate. Consuming.
For years, I stayed on the sidelines while my children experienced something I once shared with them.
Today, something shifted—and it started in a simple way.
I listened to my body.
I made sure I had food.
I made sure I had rest.
And I showed up to my course differently than I had the day before.
And what I noticed was this:
What I gave my body changed what I was able to receive.
I felt more grounded.
More present.
More open.
And what I received from that space didn’t stay in the classroom.
It followed me into my life.
After my course, I went to the fair with my daughter.
And instead of staying back…
I got on the rides.
At first, I stayed with my breath.
I gently reminded myself:
we’re safe.
And something incredible happened.
My body began to believe me.
The fear didn’t take over.
It didn’t choke me or shut me down.
Instead, there was space.
Space to laugh.
Space to sing.
Space to be fully present with my daughter in a way I haven’t been able to in years.
In that moment, I realized something powerful:
Healing isn’t just about changing your thoughts.
It’s about caring for your body in a way that allows it to feel safe again.
Today, I didn’t just get through something.
I lived it.
And for the first time in a long time, I felt:
Free.
Alive.
Back in my life.
