Let Them

Earlier today I was overwhelmed.

I had been reading through pages of reports connected to my accident case. Some parts were accurate, but other things were wrong, and seeing pieces of my life written down by strangers — especially painful moments — stirred up something deep inside me.

It’s a strange feeling to see your life summarized by people who only know fragments of the story.

I felt exposed. Misunderstood. Angry.

But instead of pushing through the stress, I stepped away.

My daughter and I grabbed something to eat. I took the dogs outside for fresh air. Later I met friends for coffee and went to a recovery meeting.

Somewhere between laughter, conversation, and the comfort of familiar faces, something shifted in me.

A simple thought came into my mind:

Let them.

Let them read what they want to read.

Let them form whatever opinions they choose.

Let them misunderstand parts of my story if they do.

Because the truth is, I already told my story.

I spent seven years writing my book. My truth is there, in my own words. I don’t need to convince everyone.

Whatever happens with the case will happen.

If things go in my favor, I will be grateful. If they don’t, life will still move forward. Either way, I know I will be okay.

Tonight reminded me that freedom often comes when we stop trying to control how others see us.

Instead, we simply live honestly and allow others to interpret our story however they choose.

And sometimes peace arrives in the quiet moment when we realize we don’t have to explain ourselves anymore.

We can simply say,

Let them.

A question for reflection:

Have you ever reached a moment in your life where you realized you no longer needed to prove or explain yourself to others?
