The Dreams I Whispered at Rock Bottom

There are moments in life that feel small at the time but later reveal themselves as turning points.

At nineteen, newly in recovery and painfully aware of the patterns I did not want to repeat, I sat in a counsellor’s office and named my dreams. They were not extravagant. They were deeply human.

I wanted to be a mother who felt safe.

I wanted a marriage rooted in partnership.

I wanted work that aligned with my values.

And someday, when I had enough distance from the chaos, I wanted to write my story.

What I did not know then was how much dirt would come before the bloom.

Recovery, for me, was not polished transformation. It was public humility. It was learning to apologize to my children in real time. It was refusing to blame them for my stress. It was showing up to meetings when I wanted to hide. It was allowing mentors and “angels” to model a softer way of living.

There were mistakes. There were tears. There were seasons I would not choose again.

But there was also intention.

My bottom came with a realization: I was beginning to resemble what had wounded me. That awareness became my line in the sand. I could not change my childhood, but I could interrupt its momentum.

Today, as I prepare to release my memoir, I am struck by something unexpected: awe.

Not because I did everything right.

But because I kept returning to the promise.

Breaking generational patterns is rarely dramatic. It is built in daily repairs, honest conversations, and humility practiced over years.

The young woman who whispered her dreams in a counselling office could not see the arc of her life. She only knew she did not want to pass her pain forward.

Looking back now, I see that the dreams became reality.

And that, more than perfection, feels miraculous.
