When Approval Stops Feeling Like Oxygen
Approval once had a grip on me so strong it felt biological.
Like oxygen.
Like survival.
I could feel the emotional temperature of a room before I could feel myself. I became fluent in reading disappointment, tension, silence, rejection. Somewhere in childhood, I learned that acceptance felt safer than authenticity, and I carried that belief far into adulthood.
So I bent.
I softened my truth.
Swallowed my needs.
Overexplained.
Performed.
Apologized for existing.
Tried endlessly to become someone no one could reject.
The tragedy of living this way is that eventually you no longer know where other people end and you begin.
Healing did not happen all at once.
It happened slowly, painfully, almost invisibly.
In tiny moments where I chose honesty over approval.
Rest over performance.
Authenticity over perfection.
Moments where I survived someone misunderstanding me and realized the world did not end.
That realization changed me.
Because when approval stops feeling like oxygen, something remarkable happens:
you begin breathing for yourself.
And for the first time in your life, freedom no longer feels selfish.
It feels peaceful.
